Sea Gulls fly past Mary Washington, 13-6
SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University baseball team picked up its seventh conference win on Wednesday, beating Capital Athletic Conference foe Mary Washington 13-6.
The Sea Gulls (9-1, 7-0 CAC) had a balanced day at the plate as every starter knocked in at least one run and scored at least one run with eight Salisbury starters recording at least one hit. Senior Mike Celenza (Gaithersburg, Md.), junior Brian Green (Salisbury, Md.) and senior Trevor Cobb (Hagerstown, Md.) led the team with three, four and three hits in the game, respectively. The team finished the game with a total of 18 hits.
Celenza, along with junior Andrew Miller (Schwenksville, Pa.), senior Tim Kellinger (Knoxville, Md.) and junior Devon Quaglietta (Monroe Township, N.J.), teamed up to drive in eight of the team’s runs. Each player finished the day with two RBI. Celenza’s two RBI bring him to a career total of 172, just one away from tying the all-time career record at Salisbury held by Nick Pegelow.
Miller, Kellinger, Cobb and junior Will Evans (Salisbury, Md.) each scored two runs to combine for more than half of the Sea Gull offense.
Salisbury’s big inning came in the second when it plated eight runs on eight hits. The Sea Gulls batted through the line-up, bringing a total of 12 players to the plate in the inning with eight different batters driving home a run.
Junior pitcher Dustin Herbert (Huntingtown, Md.) pitched seven strong innings to pick up his third win this season, striking out three and not allowing a walk. He allowed five hits and gave up only one earned run in the decision.
Salisbury will be returning home for its next game against Albertus Magnus on March 12 at 2:30 p.m., at the SU Baseball Field.
