Former Sea Gull Greg Lemon named assistant coach at Temple University

PHILADELPHIA - Former Salisbury University standout Greg Lemon has been named an assistant baseball coach at Temple University announced by head coach Rob Valli. Lemon, who was a Division III All-American at Salisbury and is currently playing professional baseball, will be working specifically with the infield players and coach first base for the Owls. Temple went 27-29 last season and posted a 16-11 mark in the Atlanitc-10 conference.

"Greg is the son of a hall of fame high school coach, a collegiate All-American, professional player, and a former Division I baseball coach in the Big East," Valli said. "Bringing Coach Lemon to Temple is a grand slam for our program."

Lemon had an outstanding career for Salisbury as he was a four-time all-conference selection and a Division III All-American first team choice in 2006. The Wilmington, Del., native was also a three-time all-region pick. Lemon also graduated as career leader in most runs scored (193), walks (95) and doubles (50) and is ranked second all-time in hits with 240.

While under the tutelage of Sea Gull coach Doug Fleetwood, he held the single-game record for hits in a game with six and at the time had the longest hitting streak in program history (23 games). That was erased by Randy Boyle last season when he hit safely in 26 straight games. The infielder ranks in the top two in seven different offensive categories. Salisbury won a pair of Capital Athletic Conference titles during his career and advanced to four NCAA tournaments including the College World Series in 2004.

As a senior at SU in '06, he led the Sea Gulls with a .410 batting average, 17 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 24 stolen bases to help Salisbury set, at the time, a school record with 37 wins. He batted .372 during his career.

"I'm excited to be joining Rob Valli's coaching staff," Lemon said. "Temple University has a rich baseball tradition and I am looking forward to making a contribution to the program."

The 24-year-old has also put together quite an impressive coaching resume. In 2008, while serving as an assistant coach for Georgetown University, Lemon helped the Hoyas to a .282 team batting average and 43 home runs, good for fifth in the Big East Conference. Lemon served as an assistant coach for the Bethesda Big Train of the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of 2007. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Sanford (Del.) High School in 2007 under his father Tom, a Delaware Baseball Coaches' Hall of Famer with over 250 career wins.

At the conclusion on his senior year, Lemon was signed by the St. George (Utah) Roadrunners of the Golden Baseball League. In 2007, he batted .380 in 22 games. Lemon registered a .386 batting average this past summer for the Roadrunners with seven home runs, 57 RBI and a team-high 22 stolen bases. The Golden Baseball League is one of seven professional independent leagues in the United States and Canada.
