Four home runs lead the charge for SU against Villa Julie

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - The game was close for four innings as No. 20 Salisbury University played a Capital Athletic Conference baseball game with Villa Julie College on Wednesday afternoon at the Bachman Sports Complex. The Sea Gulls (9-1, 2-0 CAC) went into the fifth inning knotted at 1-1 with the Mustangs (8-6-1, 1-3 CAC). SU then erupted to score 16 runs over the final five innings of play to thrash Villa Julie, 17-1.

Salisbury collected 18 hits off Villa Julie as eight of the nine starters for the Sea Gulls had two hits apiece. The Sea Gulls clubbed four home runs in three innings as the maroon and gold broken up the conference game. Freshman Andrew Miller had a three-run homer in the fifth inning. Senior right fielder Brian Camper led off the sixth inning with a solo home run. Fellow senior Justin Armiger kept the home run parade going in the seventh as he led the inning off with a his fifth home run of the season. Armiger plated two runs in the game for SU as he now leads the team with 20 RBIs. Senior catcher Tyler Riley jacked a two-run shot later in the seventh to push SU to a 10-1 lead. Salisbury scored six runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. Freshman shortstop Hunter McIntyre came off the bench in the eighth to deliver a RBI single. Junior catcher Michael Loomis had a RBI single in the ninth inning to cap the scoring for the Gulls.

Senior Ryan Bennick (4-0) pitched eight strong innings for the Sea Gulls as he surrendered one Mustang run on 10 hits, no walks and struck out five. Junior Bryan Bloch pitched the ninth inning, in relief, as he gave up one hit and walked one.

Salisbury will turn around and host Villa Julie in a doubleheader tomorrow (Thursday, March 13) at Sea Gull Field. The two 7-inning games will begin at 1 p.m. This doubleheader was slated for Saturday, March 15, but was moved up to Thursday due to expected rain showers this weekend.
