SALISBURY, Md. - The victories continue to pile
up for No. 14 Salisbury University as the Sea Gull baseball team
returned to Sea Gull Field on Saturday for a doubleheader against
Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Salisbury, fresh off three wins
last week in Florida, concluded its Spring Break with 3-1 and 9-0
wins over the Monks.
SU has won 16 consecutive games, a new school record, since it
lost the first game of the season 5-4 in 10 innings to Virginia
Wesleyan College on February 9. The Sea Gulls (16-1) are also 12-0
at home. Salisbury's old school mark of 15 wins in a row was set in
2003.
Senior third baseman Justin Armiger had quite a
day as he smashed three home runs and drove in eight runs in the
two 7-inning games. Armiger went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate,
2-for-2 in both games, and scored four different times for the
Gulls.
The Monks (7-6) pushed across their only run of the day in the
top of the first inning of the first game. Ben Grant-Roy singled
home Wade Oliver to give Saint Joseph's the early 1-0 lead. The run
off SU starter Jeff Feigl (3-0) was the first one
allowed this season by the junior right-hander. Feigl settled down
from there and pitched all seven innings for the Gulls where he
allowed two hits and struck out seven.
Armiger got Feigl and the Sea Gulls all the runs they would need
in the bottom of the first inning. Armiger slammed a three-run home
run to left field off Saint Joseph's starter Pat Moran to put the
maroon and gold up for good, 3-1. Moran pitched the entire game for
the Monks and only allowed one SU hit the rest of the game as he
struck out six.
Armiger started the second game just like he began the first
one. He jacked a three-run homer off Saint Joseph's starter Andrew
Keirstead in the bottom of the first inning as the Gulls led early,
4-0. He later hit his ninth homer of the season, a two-run shot, in
the fifth inning. Senior Mark Bostwick went
3-for-3 in the second game with a double and a home run. He scored
three times and drove in two runs. Bostwick's home run came right
after Armiger's homer in the first inning. Freshman Andrew
Miller and junior Matt Anuszewski each
added a RBI in the win.
SU freshman Dustin Herbet improved to 5-0 this
season as he pitched six scoreless innings as he surrendered two
Monk hits on two walks and struck out six. Junior Lucas
Hanson entered in the seventh to close out the win with
two strikeouts.
Salisbury will begin a busy week littered with Capital Athletic
Conference games, seven out of the next eight games. The Sea Gulls
will travel up Route 13 into Delaware to face rival Wesley College
on Monday, March 24, at Noon for a doubleheader.
