Sea Gulls rally to capture 2011 Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award
YORK, Pa. - The Salisbury University athletics
program captured six Capital Athletic Conference championships
during the 2010-11 academic year. That great success led to the
program earning the Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award for the
sixth-straight year and ninth time overall (Salisbury has been a
member of the CAC for 17 of the 20 years the All-Sports Award has
been given).
The Sea Gulls captured men’s and women’s cross country
championships in the fall, then closed out the spring with
championships in men’s lacrosse, softball, women’s
lacrosse and women’s track & field. In addition the three
other Salisbury teams finished either second or third in the
conference allowing the Sea Gulls to collect 166.50 points
throughout the 2010-11 academic year.
The Sea Gulls trailed the University of Mary Washington in the
Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award standings by one half point
heading in the 2011 men’s lacrosse championship, the final
CAC championship of the academic year. The Salisbury men’s
lacrosse team was down 12-8 to Stevenson University at halftime
time, but outscored the Mustangs 8-2 in the second half to claim
the 16-14 victory and clinch the All-Sports Award for Salisbury
University.
York (Pa.) College claimed the Men’s Commissioner’s
Award for the second-straight year after compiling 76.00 points.
Salisbury and Mary Washington each earned 93.00 points to share the
Women’s Commissioner’s Award; the tie snapped a streak
of three-straight first-place finishes for the Sea Gulls since the
inception of the Women’s Commissioner’s Award prior to
the 2007-08 academic year.
Salisbury is one of two teams to have won the All-Sports Award in
the history of the CAC as Mary Washington has claimed the title a
record 11 times (1992-98, 2002-05).
The 2010-11 academic year proved to show a balance among the
current nine institutions, as five members won at least two CAC
championships this year (Frostburg State University, Mary
Washington, Salisbury, Stevenson and York).

POINT SYSTEM
The point system awards nine "base" points for the top team in the
regular season, eight points for second place, seven points for
third place, etc., down to one point for the last-place team. Teams
can also score an additional point (maximum three points) for
success in the CAC championship tournament.
In sports that have team titles decided only by post-season championship events, points are awarded based on the standings, similar to the sports with regular seasons and playoffs (nine points for first place, eight for second, etc.). Playoff points are awarded to the top four teams (three for first place, two for second place, one for third and fourth place), similar to the sports with regular seasons and playoffs based on the top seeds advancing through the tournament.
In all 19 sports, the top team can gain a maximum of 12 points, and the last-place team earns one point.
