Salisbury University releases its 2009 Fall Schedules

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University Athletics Department officially released the 2009 fall schedules for its seven varsity teams; men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer and volleyball.

The Sea Gull athletic teams have filled their schedules with some of the most demanding and competitive schedules in the nation against nationally ranked opponents, Capital Athletic Conference contests, Atlantic Central Football Conference games and many regional non-conference rivalry games.

The Gulls have four teams set to defend conference championships from a year ago while two others set to return the conference championship trophies to SU.

Here are the schedule highlights for each sport:

Cross Country
Post Season: CAC men's and women's champions
Can't Miss Home Meet: Salisbury hosts Don Cathcart Invitational (September 26, 10 a.m.)Overview: The Salisbury men's and women's cross country teams will open their season at home (Winter Place Park) with the Sea Gull Opener the first weekend in September. SU will then travel to Towson, Md. on September 12 for the Towson University Invitational. The Gulls will close out the home schedule with the Don Cathcart Invitational. On October 2 and 10 the Sea Gulls will travel to Pennsylvania to compete in the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. and the Gettysburg Invitational in Gettysburg, Pa. ... November begins the start of championship month as it kicks off with the CAC championship in Frederick, Md. on November 7. On November 14, the NCAA Regional Championships will be held in Bethlehem, Pa., and on November 21 the NCAA National Championship will take place in Cleveland, Ohio.

Field Hockey
2008 Record: 15-4, 6-0 CAC
Post Season: Advanced to NCAA Second Round, CAC champions
Can't Miss Home Game: Salisbury vs. Messiah College (September 19, 1:00 p.m.)
Overview: SU begins its season with a pair of conference games as they travel to Hood to open the season then host St. Mary's (Md.). Salisbury will then travel to Christopher Newport. On September 12 and 13, the Sea Gulls will host the SU Invitational as they host Frostburg State, Randolph-Macon, and Ursinus. SU will then host a trio of home games against nationally ranked teams Johns Hopkins, Messiah, and Rowan. The Gulls will then make the trek to the state of Ohio on September 26 and 27 to take on Wittenberg and Kenyon. The month of October starts with SU on the road against York (Pa.), Wesley, and regional rival TCNJ. The Gulls return home to face Stevenson before closing out the season with away contests against Mary Washington and Catholic to ready the Gulls for CAC and NCAA Tournament play.

Football
2008 Record: 9-2, 2-1 ACFC
Post Season: ECAC Southwest Bowl Champions
Can't Miss Home Game: Salisbury vs. Union College - Homecoming (October 24, 12:00 p.m.)
Overview: SU will begin its season on September 5 at home against Pace. The Gulls will hit the road the following two weeks where they will take on NC Wesleyan and Christopher Newport. Salisbury will return back to Sea Gull Stadium for a pair of home games against St. Johns Fisher and Newport News Apprentice for family day. After a week off in early October, the Gulls will travel to Ohio on October 17 for a matchup against Lake Erie. The Gulls will host Union for Homecoming on the 24th of October. SU will travel up Route 13 for a Halloween day treat on October 31 against rival Wesley College. The Gulls start of November will travel to Hampden-Sydney to close out the non-conference schedule. On November 14 the Sea Gulls will take on Frostburg State at Sea Gull Stadium in 11th annual Regents Cup game.

Men's Soccer
2008 Record: 15-4-3, 5-2-1 CAC
Post Season: Advanced to NCAA Tournament, CAC champions
Can't Miss Home Game: Salisbury vs. Johns Hopkins (September 23, 4:00 p.m.)
Overview: The Sea Gulls open up the season on September 1 to travel Washington (Md.) for a night game to open the season. The Gulls return home on the 5th and 6th for the annual Elmer Lord Soccer Classic featuring Capital, Richard Stockton, and St. Mary's (Md.). The following weekend SU will compete in the St. Mary's Classic featuring Bridgewater, Randolph-Macon, and St. Mary's (Md.). The Gulls hit the road for a pair of games against Gallaudet and Roanoke. SU hosts Johns Hopkins in a midweek matchup before pivotal CAC game against York College. September ends with a home match against Wesley, before starting October off at Lynchburg. The Gulls host Stevenson, and then travel to St. Mary's and Marymount. SU closes out the regular season with a three game homestand against Hood, Christopher Newport, and Mary Washington. Then the Gulls are set to prepare for the upcoming CAC Tournament and NCAA Tournament.

Volleyball
2008 Record: 36-2, 8-0 CAC
Post Season: Advanced to Second Round of NCAA Tournament, CAC champions
Can't Miss Home Game: Salisbury vs. Christopher Newport (October 23, 6:00 p.m.)Overview: The Sea Gulls open up the season in September with a pair of tournaments in Pa. as they compete in the Gettysburg and Washington & Jefferson Tournaments respectively. The Gulls open up conference play with York College on September 16. The Gulls host the two day SU Invitational September 18th and 19th with Allegheny, Baldwin Wallace, Haverford, and Richard Stockton competing. SU welcomes Mary Washington for a midweek contest before hosting the Sea Gull Invitational with Goucher, Johns Hopkins, and Virginia Wesleyan in attendance. The Gulls close out September on the road against Marymount (Va.) and open up October at the Christopher Newport Tournament. SU has a pair of conference home games against Gallaudet and Hood before traveling to Stevenson. The Gulls host Christopher Newport, which should be one of the most competitive games on the schedule. The Sea Gulls wrap up conference play with St. Mary's (Md.) on October 28 before heading to St. Mary's (Md.) Tournament before the start of the conference tournament.

Women's Soccer
2008 Record: 8-4-5, 6-0-2 CAC
Post Season: Advanced to Second Round of CAC Tournament
Can't Miss Home Game: Salisbury vs. Virginia Wesleyan (September 2, 4:30 p.m.)
Overview: Last year's CAC regular season champions open up the season at home against Virginia Wesleyan on September 2. The Sea Gulls host the SU Classic on September 5 and 6 where they will face Methodist and Guilford. The following weekend the Gulls will compete in the Lynchburg Tournament. SU hosts Rowan in a midweek matchup before beginning conference play with a pair of road games against Stevenson and Wesley. The maroon and gold close out the month of September at home against Christopher Newport. They open up the month of October with a pair of home games against Mary Washington and Richard Stockton before traveling to York College. The Sea Gulls close out the regular season at Marymount, vs. Hood, and at St. Mary's before the CAC tournament.
