2008-09 Salisbury University Winter Athletic Schedules announced

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University Athletics Department officially released the 2008-09 winter schedules for its ­six winter teams; men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field and men's and women's swimming.

Once again the Sea Gull athletic teams have filled their schedules with nationally ranked opponents, Capital Athletic Conference contests and many regional non-conference rivalry games. 

Here are the schedule highlights for each sport:

Men's Basketball
2007-2008 Record: 7-20, 4-12 Capital Athletic Conference
Postseason: CAC semifinalists
Can't Miss Home Game: Salisbury vs. St. Mary's (Md.) (February 2, 8 p.m.)
Overview: The maroon and gold will kick off their season on November 18 as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan College, who two years ago won the Division III National Championship. Salisbury will then travel to Carlisle, Pa., on November 21 and 22 to participate in the Dickinson College tournament.  Three days later, SU will travel to Stevenson, Md., to participate in the Pride of Maryland Tournament.  This will be Salisbury's fourth consecutive year participating in the tournament. The Sea Gulls will be at home from December 3-9. The homestand begins with a Capital Athletic Conference game against University of Mary Washington. SU will then host the annual Optimist Classic and face Albright on December 5 followed by a championship or consolation game on Saturday. The Gulls close out the homestand with CAC rival York (Pa.) College on December 9. SU is off until January 3 when the Sea Gulls begin the New Year with a non-conference bout with Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College. SU is on the road the majority of January as the Sea Gulls will be in the thick of their conference schedule. The Sea Gulls return home for back-to-back home games on January 17 and 19.  The month of February kicks-off with a big home game as the Sea Gulls host the CAC champion Seahawks from St. Mary's (Md.) College on February 2. SU will close out the regular-season with two home games on February 18 and 21 before the conference tournament begins on February 24.

Women's Basketball
2007-2008 Record: 12-15, 8-8 Capital Athletic Conference
Postseason: CAC semifinalists
Can't Miss Home Game: Salisbury vs. Hood (February 21, 2 p.m. - WBCA Pink Zone Game)
Overview: Salisbury will kick off its 2008-2009 season in Union, N.J. for the Kean University Tip-Off Tournament. SU will face Baldwin-Wallace on November 15 to begin the season followed by a game the next day. The maroon and gold will then travel to Virginia Wesleyan College on November 19 before returning home for a six-game homestand. SU will host The College of New Jersey on November 22 in the home opener for the maroon and gold. The Sea Gulls will then host Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College on November 25 and will start conference play against University of Mary Washington, a Final Four team two years ago, on December 3. SU will then host its annual Optimist Classic as the Gulls face non-conference opponents Widener College and Lebanon Valley College on December 5 and 6. The homestand and first half of the schedule concludes on December 9 when the Sea Gulls face York (Pa.) College in another CAC game. The team is off until the New Year where the Sea Gulls will participate in the New York University Classic on January 3-4 and face Brockport State and College of St. Elizabeth. The rest of the regular-season are CAC games as the Sea Gulls go on the road for three conferences games before coming home to face Gallaudet University on January 17 and Stevenson University on January 19. SU will then bus across the Chesapeake Bay for its next three CAC games before the Gulls return to the Maggs Center for games against St. Mary's (February 2) and Route 13 rival Wesley College (February 7). Salisbury will have one last road trip during the regular season when they go to Gallaudet University (February 11) and Stevenson University (February 14). The women's team will conclude their regular-season at home with games against Marymount (February 18) and Hood College (February 21). The Hood game is the WBCA Pink Zone Game this season for the Sea Gulls. The CAC tournament will begin on February 24.

Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field
Postseason:
NCAA Indoor Championships - Delannie Spriggs (4th place - 55 meter dash)
Can't Miss Meet: Salisbury at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., for the 2009 Mason-Dixon Indoor Track and Field Championships (February 22, 9 a.m.)
Overview: SU will begin the Kevin Lucas era on January 31 when the Sea Gull head coach begins the track and field season in Newark, Del., for the Thomson Invitational at the University of Delaware on January 31. The following weekend the Sea Gulls head to Newport News, Va., and Christopher Newport University for the first of two trips in a three-week period. The maroon and gold will head north to New York City for the Lafayette Rider Invitational on February 13. SU heads back to CNU for the 2009 Mason-Dixon Indoor Track and Field Championships on February 22. The month of March begins with the George Mason University Winter Games (March 1). The Sea Gulls travel back to the state of Virginia one more time, when they conclude their regular-season on the campus of Virginia Tech in the Hokies' Last Chance Meet (March 7). If any Salisbury athletes qualify for the 2009 NCAA national championships they will be held on March 13-14 in Terre Haute, Ind., at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Men's and Women's Swimming
2007-2008 Record:

Men's team: 7-4, 4-2 Capital Athletic Conference
Women's team: 6-5, 3-3 Capital Athletic Conference
Postseason: CAC men (3rd place), CAC women (4th place)
Can't Miss Home Meet: Salisbury hosts Washington (November 12, 6 p.m.)
Overview: The Sea Gulls will begin their season with a home meet against Rowan University on October 28 at 6 p.m. They will take a few days off before facing off with Capital Athletic Conference champion University of Mary Washington and Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., on November 1 at 1 p.m. A week later, SU will travel to Marymount (Va.) University for a CAC dual meet with the Saints on November 8. Salisbury returns home for its final home match of the fall semester when the Sea Gulls welcome Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College on November 12 for a 6 p.m. meet. SU will participate in the Kutztown Invitational on November 21-22 and then close out the semester with a road meet at York, Pa., where the Sea Gulls will face the Spartans and Goucher College. Salisbury will begin the New Year on the road with a trip to Frederick, Md., where the maroon and gold will face CAC foe Hood College and in-state rival Frostburg State University. SU will conclude their regular-season with two home meets on January 24 against St. Mary's (Md.) College and January 31 against Catholic University of America. The CAC championships return to St. Mary's City, Md., on February 13-15 as they are hosted by the Seahawks on the campus of SMC.
