Sea Gulls ready for CAC Championship Saturday
SALISBURY, Md. - The six fall athletic teams that compete in the Capital Athletic Conference for Salisbury University will have a shot to do something they have never done before, sweep the fall CAC championships.
Salisbury is the only school to have a shot at pulling this feat off on Saturday, November 3, on CAC Championship Saturday, when all six championships will be awarded out. The Sea Gulls are still alive in all six championship events and will look to beat their best effort of five CAC championships won in the fall of 2000. Last season, the maroon and gold brought home four CAC championships.
The Sea Gulls are the top-seed in four of the CAC championships which include; field hockey, men's soccer and women's soccer as all three will host title games on Saturday. The second-seed volleyball team will host St. Mary's (Md.) College on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. in the Maggs Center. The Seahawks took down top-seed and defending two-time CAC champion Gallaudet University on Thursday night.
Salisbury's cross country teams will go toe-to-toe with University of Mary Washington on Saturday morning in the men's and women's championships being held at York, Pa. The SU women's team has won three straight titles and the men's team has won the last two titles in a row.
The SU women's soccer team kicks-off the busy afternoon as the defending CAC champions host York (Pa.) College at Noon at the SU Soccer Complex.
SU's field hockey team, ranked No. 3 in the country, has won the last 12 straight CAC titles and will look for No. 13 on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when the maroon and gold host second-seed St. Mary's (Md.) College at Sea Gull Stadium.
One of the most anticipated rematches of the day will start at 2:30 p.m. at the SU Soccer Complex as the top-seed SU men's soccer team hosts No. 9 ranked and second-seed Spartans from York (Pa.) College. Salisbury is the only team to defeat the two-time defending CAC champions this season.
The evening will be topped off with the volleyball championship in the Maggs Center for the first time since 2004.
Since the CAC formed back in 1991 there has only been one team to win all six fall championships and that was Mary Washington in '91. The six founding members of the CAC are: Catholic, Gallaudet, Marymount (Va.), Mary Washington. St. Mary's (Md.) and York (Pa.). Salisbury became a full fledge member in 1994. In the 13 seasons Salisbury has been a member of the CAC the maroon and gold have won 33 championships, second most behind Mary Washington's 46. Since 1994, Salisbury has won the most CAC championships with 33 with Mary Washington right behind the Sea Gulls with 30.
