Salisbury University captures 2007-08 CAC All-Sports Award for third year in a row

YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its end of the year awards for the 2007-08 season and Salisbury University swept all three as the top athletic program. The Sea Gulls captured the conference All-Sports Award, given annually to the top all-around athletic program in the conference over the course of one academic year, for a third straight time and sixth overall since joining the conference in 1994-95.

The Sea Gulls won nine of the 19 conference championships and was runner-up in five other championships during the season. Salisbury accumulated 182 points to edge out University of Mary Washington (170.67 points) for the top spot.

This is the first time the All-Sports Award has been awarded as the Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award, which was re-named in December 2007, to honor former CAC Commissioner Richard C. Cook who served the conference for 15 years.

Salisbury also won the new Men's and Women's Commissioner's awards which recognizes the program that scores the most men's and women's points. The Sea Gulls tallied 101 points in the 10 women's sports and 81 points in the nine CAC men's sports.

The Sea Gulls won CAC championships in baseball, field hockey, men's cross country, men's lacrosse, men's soccer, men's track and field, softball, volleyball and women's lacrosse. Salisbury finished second in the conference in men's tennis, women's cross country, women's soccer, women's tennis and women's track and field.

Mary Washington finished second in all three categories this season. The Eagles have won the CAC All-Sports Award a record 11 times (1992-98, 2002-05). This is the second time in school history the Sea Gulls have won the All-Sports Award three years in a row (1998-99, 1999-2000, 2000-2001).

POINT SYSTEM
The new point system approved by the Board of Directors awards nine "base" points for the top team in the regular season, eight points for second place, seven points for third place, etc, down to one point for the last-place team.  Teams can also score an additional point (maximum three points) for success in CAC championship tournament.

In sports that have team titles decided only by post-season championship events, points are awarded based on the standings, similar to the sports with regular seasons and playoffs (nine points for first place, eight for second, etc.).  Playoff points are awarded to the top four teams (three for first place, two for second place, one for third and fourth place), similar to the sports with regular seasons and playoffs based on the top seeds advancing through the tournament.

In all 19 sports, the top team can gain a maximum of 12 points, and the last-place team earns one point.
