Former SU Sea Gulls Super Bowl XLI champions

The Indianapolis Colts were down early in Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears in Miami but were never out of the game. Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning led his team back from eight points down to a 29-17 victory over the Bears to earn the Colts their second ever championship in franchise history.

As the Colts celebrated in the locker room after the game two former Salisbury University Sea Gulls were right there in the mix. Colts head athletic trainer Hunter Smith and his assistant Dave Walston (Class of 1987) had the chance to celebrate the perfect ending to a long season.

Smith cut his teeth in the athletic training profession with Salisbury University back in the 1970's. The Salisbury native served as the head athletic trainer and assistant physical education professor at SU from 1972-82 before moving onto William & Mary for one year and then, ultimately, with the Colts.

Walston was one of the first students current SU Head Athletic Trainer Pat Lamboni taught. The Denton, Md., native graduated in 1987 and spent several stints in the college ranks before landing in Indianapolis with Smith.
