Scarborough to receive new award as four are inducted at 2011 Salisbury Hall of Fame banquet
SALISBURY, Md. – One of the high points
of the athletic year is the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. This
year that event gets a little more impressive. Along with the
inductions of former Salisbury University student-athletes
April Harned, Jennifer Mezzadra
Exelby and Rebecca Mitchell Agoglia, the
University has introduced a new honor, the Award of Excellence,
which will be given for the first time, to J. Michael
Scarborough, the
fourth inductee for this year.
The ceremony will be held as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities, on Friday, Nov. 4 at the Guerrieri University Center in the Wicomico Room beginning at 6 p.m.
The Salisbury University Hall of Fame induction is one of the premier events of the year for the SU Athletics Department. The formal event recognizes the men and women, past and present, whose contributions to Salisbury University athletics have deemed them worthy of induction into the SU Hall of Fame.
Harned (Class of 2001) was a four-year standout for the softball team. She was named a two-time All-American (1999, 2001) as well as a two-time first team all-region selection. Harned was also a second team All-CAC performer as a freshman in 1998 and a subsequent first team honoree from 1999-2001. Harned earned CAC Player of the Year honors in 2000-01 and Rookie of the Year in 1998. Harned, who graduated as the program’s all-time hits leader (238), is now tied for second in the category. She is the Sea Gulls’ all-time leader with 180 RBI and is also tied for first in school history with 51 doubles. Harned is second in school history in home runs (33) and sixth in runs scored (139).

Mezzadra Exelby was first team all-region for her final three seasons while being named All-CAC First Team the same three years. She was also named CAC Player of the Year in 2001 with the most goals (84) in a single season in school history and the fourth-most points (117). Mezzadra-Exelby is the program’s all-time leader in goals (248), second in points (315) and 10th in assists (67).
Mitchell Agoglia (Class of 2001), the first swimming inductee into the Hall of Fame, was a four-year NCAA qualifier. She was a 15-time All-CAC performer in freestyle medley and butterfly events, holding the school and pool records in the 200- and 500-meter free, 100 fly and 200 individual medley. Mitchell Agoglia also holds school records in the 200, 400 and 800 free as well as in the 200 and 400 medley relay. She was CAC champion in the 400 free relay, 100 and 200 free and 200 medley relay and was named the 2000-01 CAC Women’s Swimmer of the Year.
The Award of Excellence was added during the summer of 2011 as a way to honor outstanding individuals who had participated in varsity athletics while at Salisbury University, but had continued to help shine a light on the University since their graduation.
Scarborough (Class of 1976), a three-year member of the football team and a member of the wrestling team, was the team’s leading receiver in its inaugural year, catching 15 passes for 137 yards in 1973. In two years, he caught 20 balls for 168 yards and one touchdown and was instrumental in blocking for the program’s outstanding rushing attack. While completing his studies, Scarborough was a Founding Father of the Maryland Sigma chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at Salisbury University. Since his graduation, Scarborough has gone on to start a number of businesses including Scarborough Capital Management, Inc. which is a leader in the field of 401(k) and 403(b) retirement planning. Scarborough’s company works with some of the largest Fortune 500 companies on retirement planning for their employees.
